THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD - DR KANG

LUDHIANA, APRIL 5:

"The pen is mightier than the sword.' Writers have the capability to express anything and everything through the power of pen,� stated PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang while presiding over the function organized by Asian Writers Association, Denmark, in collaboration with PAU Young writers Association, Ludhiana. The event was organized at Punjab Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute (PAMETI) auditorium on the PAU campus to bestow �Baba Bulleh Shah Memorial Award� on the former Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Dr S.P. Singh for his contribution in the promotion of Punjabi language and culture.

Congratulating him for bagging the award, Dr Kang said that Dr Singh is known as a teacher activist. His work in the field of Parvaasi Punjabi literature is praiseworthy and as a Vice-Chancellor, he contributed to the promotion of closer understanding between the people of East and West Punjab. Adding that he is a man who thinks not only of himself, but of the society at large, Dr Kang highlighted that PAU has also worked for the benefit of the society by making nation self-sufficient in food production, He remarked, �If university won�t progress, the food security will be under threat.� Dr Kang presented the award to Dr Singh which carried a citation, shawl, a cash prize of Rs 11,000 and a portrait of Baba Bulleh Shah.

Swaran Singh Parwana, President of Denmark based Asian Writers Association, said that the award was introduced to honour the person who plays a pivotal role in the promotion of Punjabi literature, values and culture. He added that Dr Singh has been conferred the award for he, as a Punjabi writer, has carved a creditable niche for himself by in the development and progress of Punjabi literature.� 

Speaking on this occasion, Dr S.P.Singh, Vice-President, Education Council, Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College (GGNKC), shared his experiences and achievements and said that the award is the outcome of the hard work. This will enthuse me to work more efficiently for the rich heritage of Punjab, he said. Having worked in different fields, Dr Singh added, �One feels happy to see the students progressing in life and winning awards in various fields."

Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman, Additional Director of Communication, PAU, addressing the gathering, referred to Dr Singh as a multi-dimensional personality. As an academician and a writer, he has created a separate identity by working for the welfare of �Punjabiat� and promoting Punjabi thinking among the youth. PAU is not only an agricultural university but a university of Punjabi culture as well, said he, while stating that Denmark Association has worked not only in India and Pakistan but also different parts of the country.

Earlier, Gurbhajan Singh Gill welcoming the presiding officer, the awardee, and other dignitaries, said that the academician Dr Singh has played a key role in strengthening of the rural economy and by working for the betterment of the society through his writings. During his tenure as VC, some of the initiatives that were undertaken to further promote the Punjabi Culture include the establishment of Centre for Punjab Studies for the new generations of Punjabis settled abroad, establishment of a Heritage Complex and adoption of Preet Nagar - A model village founded by legendary Punjabi writer Gurbux Singh Preetlari.'

The Punjabi poet S. Maan Singh Maan and Prof. Manjit Singh of GGNKC also spoke on this occasion. They lauded the efforts of the Association of honouring the people working the promotion of Punjabi language. 

Dr Nirmal Jaura, Deputy Director (Public Relations), conducted the proceeding of the event. Portraits of Baba Bulleh Shah were presented the poets and dignitaries present on the occasion and a cash of Rs 50,000 was given to GGNKC.
