Description: Description: Faiz and Daaman

Faiz Ahmed Faiz poses with revolutionary Punjabi poet Ustaad Daaman in this undated photograph.

Daaman, whose real name was Chiragh Din, was a tailor by profession. He joined the independence movement against the British encouraged by leftist leader Mian Iftikharuddin, who invited him to recite a poem at a meeting of Indian National Congress. Jawahirlal Nehru called him the poet of freedom.
Daaman was a critic of the military governments that followed Pakistan’s independence. Among his most famous verses was: Pakistan diyaan maujaan hee maujaan, chaarey passay faujaan hee faujan. Faiz would say his good friend Daaman was the Habib Jalib of Punjabi poetry.

Ustaad Daaman’s last public appearance was at Faiz’s funeral on November 20, 1984, where he kept saying it was now his turn to die. He died less than two weeks later on December 3.
