Even excellent songs were composed in Guru Dutt’s film ‘Bharosa’, 1963, with songs like “Aaj ki mulaqat bus itni”, where all the songs were sung by Muhammad Rafi. The song “Jaan-e-bahaar husn tera” picturised on Shammi Kapoor with B Saroja Devi as heroine for the movie ‘Pyar Kiya To Darna Kaya’ is memorable because of its base in Raag Malkauns’.

The listeners of music all over the world wish happy birthday to Rafi on December 24, every year. The noble soul had left his admirers more than three decades ago. Yet he is alive in numerous everlasting hit songs, which are heard and cherished for generations. In a reference held in 2011 in memories of Rafi, music composer Ravi told the audience that he had met Rafi 64 years ago and he gave lovely numbers in the movies ‘Bharosa’, Chaudavin Ka Chand’ and alike. Ravi’s simplicity of tunes, yet attractiveness can be quoted from the 1966 movie ‘Dus Lakh’s song “Aa lag ja gale dilruba”.

Association with Madan Mohan: Madan Mohan was another composer whose favourite singer was Rafi though he used Talat Mahmud’s voice very well also. For example in his movie ‘Haqeeqat’ (1964) he had used Rafi’s vocals for the songs “Kar chale hum fida” and “Main yeh soch kar tere dar se” admirably well. In a song he used Rafi, Talat, Manna Dey and Bhupinder Singh for the song “Ho ke majboor humay us nei bhulaya”. Rafi’s first solo with Madan Mohan was for the film ‘Ankhen’ (1950). Its lyrics were “Hum ishq mein barbad hain” penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. Sanjeev Kohli had stated, as mentioned in my book Melody Makers that though Chetan Anand was one of Madan Mohan’s best friends and loyal supporters, he didn’t think the songs of ‘Heer Ranjha’ (“Yeh duniya yeh mehfil”) and ‘Hanste Zakhm’ (“Tum jo mil gaye ho”) in a Chitrahaar stood a fair chance against lesser songs filmed on better actor and actresses. I have also mentioned in my above referred book that Madan Mohan made such a blend of instrumental support with the vocals that both complimented each other like a question-answer session. For example, Rafi songs “Mein nigahein terey chehrey sey hataoon” from ‘Aap Ki Parchaiyan’ and “Teri ankhon key siwa duniya mein” from ‘Chiragh’ are classic examples to vouch for this observation. That is why whenever Khayyam or Naushad give an interview, they made it a point to mention Madan Mohan’s name. I must mention Rafi’s golden voice used by Madan Mohan for the movie ‘Mera Saya’ for the song “Ap ke pehlu main aa kar”. The list of the Mohan-Rafi team is quite lengthy but I shall quote only a few examples apart from the one’s mentioned above like, “Yei tou kaho kaun ho tum” (with Lata, lyrics: Majrooh), “Basti basti parbat parbat” (lyrics: Sahir Ludhyanvi), “Yehi hei tammana tere dar kei samney” (lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan), “Kisi ki yaad main duniya ko hain bhulae” (lyrics: Rajinder Krishen), “ap ko pyar chupene ki buri aadat hei” (with Asha Bhonsle, lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan), “Aik haseen shaam ko dil mera” (lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan), “Zameen se humain asman par” (lyrics: Rajinder Krishen), “Barbad muhabbat ki dua” (lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan), “Tere dar pe aaya hun” (lyrics: Sahir Ludhyanvi), “Tere kooche main tera diwana” (lyrics: Kaif Azmi), “Kabhi tera daman na chorain gei hum” (with Asha, lyrics: Rajinder Krishen), “Zulf bikhrati chali aai ho” (lyrics: Rajinder Krishen), “Tumhari zulf ke saye main sham kar lun ga” (my all time favourite, lyrics: Kaifi Azmi), “Yun rootho na haseena” (lyrics: Rajinder Krishen), “Kaise kate gi zindigi tere baghair” (unreleased in the film but later released in an album), “Barbad muhabbat ki dua”, “Meri awaz suno” and “Tujhe kya sunaun main dilruba” (film: ‘Aakhri Daao’, lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri). I must mention a song “Ik larki bholi bhaali si” from the movie ‘Chawkidaar’ (1974), a medium pace rhythm song. This movie starred Sanjeev Kumar, Yogeeta Bali, Vinod Khanna, Jeevan, Om Prakash and Sulochana Latkar.

Rediffmovie site on June 30, 2010, posted that two unreleased songs rendered by Rafi and composed by Mohan were released to mark the death anniversaries of the legendary musical duo that collaborated on some of the greatest hits in Bollywood. Incidentally Rafi’s 30th death anniversary fell on Saturday while July 14 marked Madan Mohan’s 35th death anniversary that year. The two songs were recorded in their lifetime, but remained unreleased as the respective films were shelved. The first song, “Ya Illahi, ik haseena nei machai hai tabahi” is a naughty number sung by Rafi in his inimitable style, which was probably recorded in the mid-1960s, according to a statement by Mohan’s family members. This song, a situational number, was located from the composer’s master spools. The second song “Har sapna ik din toote” is a philosophical number recorded in the early 1970s.

It is a tune in Madan Mohan’s unique style and has been sung with great emotions by Muhammad Rafi. Even today after so many years of creation of these songs, music lovers still yearn to listen to them. It has been reported that ten songs recorded remained unreleased, as the films stopped midway and the songs remained unheard, until they were located on Madan Mohan’s master spools. Some of these were released on 1980 on a Long Play record while seven of these were released on the album titled ‘Tere Bagair’ – Mohan in 2009, which also featured songs by other singing greats. Three of these were never released except on Mohan’s website www.madanmohan.in very recently. For the first time, all these 10 songs by Rafi have been compiled on a single CD titled ‘Kaise Kategi Zindagi’, a refrain of his countless fans and the mukhra of the pathos-laden opening track of this CD indicating Mohan’s versatility; emotional, romantic, spiritual, dance songs and lilting duets. This CD is released by Yash Raj music, the same label that earlier released Tere Bagair and of course, ‘Veer Zaara’, the memorable Yash Chopra directed film that had Mohan’s unused tunes recreated to form the much-appreciated soundtrack.

Lastly I must mention about the story about the movie ‘Jahan Ara’. Writer/director Vinod Kumar was insistent upon using the vocals of Rafi while its composer Madan Mohan wanted Talat Mahmood to sing “Phir wohi shaam”, “Teri aankh kei ansu pee jaoon” and “Main teri nazar ka saroor hoon” (All these songs became hit songs in Talat Mahmood’s voice despite movie’s commercial failure). There was a deadlock and the director threatened to change the adamant composer in favour of music composer Roshan. Ironically, Mohan spent a hefty amount on the recording of Mahmood from his own pocket.

Association with OP Nayyar: Rafi’s association with music composer OP Nayyar needs special mention, especially for the magic they created together in 1950s and 1960s. The team created many songs for the movies such as ‘Naya Daur’ (1957), ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ (1957) and ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ (1964). Nayyar admitted in his life time that had there been no Rafi, there would have been no Nayyar. It is irony that Rafi sang as background voice for Kishore Kumar (who was later prepared to oust Rafi by the latter’s adversaries) the song “Mun mora banwara” for the film ‘Ragini’. Rafi sang for Kishore Kumar in movies such as ‘Baaghi’, ‘Shehzaada’ and ‘Shararat’ also.

Nayyar used Rafi and Asha Bhosle for most of his songs. My memories go back to the movie ‘Mr. and Mrs. Fifty Five’ in which Rafi gave memorable songs for Guru Dutt and Johny Walker. The highlight of this movie were its songs; Geeta Dutt and Rafi’s “Janey kahan mera jiger gaya ji”, “Udher tum haseen ho idher dil jawan hei”, “Chal diye bandanawaz” and Rafi’s solo “Aji dil peh huwa aisa jaadoo”. The 1954 movie ‘Aar Paar’ was again a movie full of entertainment. Rafi’s “Muhabbat kar lo jee bhar lo” and another one, a duet with Geeta Dutt’s “Sun sun sun zalima” have been outstandingly popular songs. The 1964 directed Shakti Samatha movie ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ has lovely Rafi-Asha’s duets “Diwana hua badal” and “Isharon isharon mein” and Rafi’s solos such as “Kisi na kisi koi kabhi na kabhi”, “Tareef karun kaya us ki jis nei tumhain banaya” and “Hei duniya usi ki zamana usi ka”.
If Rafi made to suit his voice for all the leading heroes of his time, singing for hero Biswajeet was no exception. Biswajeet driving and singing “Pukarta chala gaya hun main” in a car whereas Asha Parekh walks in front, was a lovely melody. Rafi did the same for Dharmendra who sings for Rajshree in the movie ‘Muhabbat Zindigi Hei’, the song “Na jane kyun hamare dil ko”. Music lovers must have noticed that OP had the knack for using catchy rhythms, eastern instruments such as sarangi, sitar and santoor for interval pieces with rare use of violins (as a bar piece) like in this song.

Another Rafi’s solo from this movie is “Tumhari mulaqat se”. A heart throbbing melody is “Aap ke haseen rukh pe aaj naya noor” from Dharmendra-Tanuja 1965 movie ‘Baharain Phir Bhi Aayein Gi’. It is beautiful melody in a steady medium-slow beat. Another duet with Asha from this movie is “Suno suno Miss Chatterjee”. 

Rafi sang a total of 197 numbers (56 solo) for Nayyar. The song “Jawaniyan yei mast mast” and the title song “Yun to humne lakh haseen daikhe hain” were for the 1957 Nasir Hussain film ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’. Amita removing cap of Shami Kapoor’s head and singing and running after him in the song “Daikho qasam se” with typical dholak beat in the antara and western beat in the interludes is a catchy duet by Rafi and Asha.
